Workhorse Cliff Caines

Films index A to Z

The horse, a companion to humans for millennia, is a hard worker that has helped us become what we are. This is the central figure of Workhorse, in which Cliff Caines examines our complex and privileged relationship with the animal. For a year, the filmmaker observed a lumberjack, a farmer and a horse-pulling competitor. The film documents their daily efforts, magnifying the combined movements of man and horse. Shot in beautiful black and white, with a remarkable feel for composition and captivating lyrical sequences, Workhorse leads us, through its protagonists and their activities, to question the evolution of our relationship with work and consider alternatives to industrial production.
