When Things Occur Oraib Toukan

Film index A to Z

At a time when images of war are transmitted instantly to our devices, what does it mean to watch suffering from a safe distance? Is the digital realm a conduit for empathy? By assembling Skype conversations with photographers, drivers and fixers based in Gaza, Palestinian artist Oraib Toukan examines the implications of several images that have circulated widely. The men tell the stories behind these “viral” photographs, the memories that haunt them, the difficult ethical choices they face. A single click of a shutter can turn into millions of social-media clicks. What are the stakes for the people in the photographs? How can digital justice be done to their suffering? Toukan’s film is as intelligent as it is topical. (CS)
