Film index A to Z

Sharlene Bamboat’s astonishing video essay explores, with wry humour and dazzling visuals, the relationships between popular culture and politics in her native Pakistan. She focuses on the 1980s and 1990s, when nationalism was steadily beamed to the nation’s TV sets, while underground filmmaking emerged to keep cinema alive amidst censorship. The director combines a variety of source materials to tell her complex story: on the one hand, television archives, which she analyzes; and on the other, scenes in which two little girls and a young man play the roles of contemporary viewers of the glittering, larger-than-life musicals being shown on the small screen.
