Filmmaker Onyeka Igwe tells the story of her grandfather, in the process immersing us in Nigeria’s colonial past. To capture the complexity of that history, she adopts an unconventional formal approach that multiplies perspectives and modes of representation: multi-voice narration, colonial archival materials, a Nigerian series inspired by an Igbo novel, personal travelogues, a folk tale about the fate of twin brothers, as well as performances and dance. Collectively these disparate materials form fertile ground for an engrossing reflection and an intensely creative formal exploration, succeeding in deconstructing colonial narratives and understanding the past with fresh eyes, the better to understand the present.
