The Image You Missed Donal Foreman

Film index A to Z

Donal Foreman barely knew his late father, Arthur MacCaig. An American documentarist of Irish extraction, MacCaig was living in Paris when he died in 2008, having returned to Ireland only to film the evolution and conclusion of a conflict he had covered for more than 30 years. Blending archival footage shot by MacCaig with his own and his family’s, Foreman juxtaposes his own artistic and political vision with his father’s, while revisiting a crucial part of Irish history. Above all, the film’s haunting beauty is found in the affecting parallels between history writ large and the private story of a son who, in the melancholy tones of an abandoned child, is trying to understand why he was his father’s forgotten footage.

The first screening will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Prof. Emer O'Toole

Originally from Galway, Ireland, Emer O'Toole is Associate Professor of Irish Performance Studies at the School of Irish Studies, Concordia University. She is author of the book Girls Will Be Girls and a columnist for The Guardian.

Presented in collaboration with The School of Irish Studies, Concordia University
