The Earth Is Blue as an Orange Iryna Tsilyk

Films A to Z

Anna and her four children live in a Ukrainian town on the edge of the Donbass war zone. They have stayed despite the bombardments, and never stop trying to enjoy life and the pleasures of being together. Iryna Tsilyk takes us inside their lives just as the eldest daughter is preparing to leave home to attend film school. It’s a passion the siblings and their mother share: they are all working on a fictional film meant to exorcise the traumas of war. An intimate approach and strong narrative sense allow the filmmaker to tell a poignant story about childhood and resilience in wartime, while recalling the vital role that art sometimes plays. A luminous work, overflowing with hope despite the grim context. (Apolline Caron-Ottavi)
