Contemplating Dystopia - Nov 19 to Nov 25

Tension Structures Feargal Ward, Adrian Duncan

Films A to Z

To design resilient structures, architects need to consider the most pessimistic scenarios – earthquakes, floods, storms. Obsessed by such considerations, an engineer criss-crosses Europe, from a failed bridge in Bavaria to Paris, where he marvels at the French capital’s ambitious structures. The Pompidou centre, the Grande arche de la Défense, the glass building in Parc de la Villette: buildings with complex architecture that strike a precise balance between opposing forces. Juxtaposing the utopian ideals embodied in the structures with the social tensions stalking Europe, in particular the yellow-vest movement, this melancholy travelogue attempts to define the visions that societies use to build their worlds, and why they fail to preserve them. (Charlotte Selb)
