Swarm Season Sarah Christman

Films index A to Z

The environmental crisis has led to plenty of activist documentaries, but none of them is anything like Swarm Season, the first feature film by Sarah Christman, filmed in Hawaii. Taking as her starting point a mother-daughter effort to domesticate wild bees resistant to extreme weather, the film soon immerses us in a cosmological and poetic atmosphere. The bees’ fate is juxtaposed with the controversial construction of a telescope on land sacred to indigenous Hawaiians, a NASA simulation of life on Mars, and the underwater eruption of a massive volcano. Humans quickly exit the foreground, and the film becomes a sensory journey that inspires us to see the world differently.
