Natural Stories

Space Dogs Elsa Kremser, Levin Peter

Films index A to Z

Starting with the first living being sent into orbit – Laïka, the Russian dog – Space Dogs looks at the history of the space race from the perspective of animals. The filmmakers combine rare archival footage from the USSR’s golden age of space exploration with contemporary images, following, among other things, the lives of two stray dogs in Moscow. The result is a captivating stroll from the stars to vacant lots, questioning the idea of exploration and our relationship with animals. By looking at how they reflect us (but without anthropomorphizing them), the film makes us confront our own violence against animals, as well as our fascination with the unknown. A philosophical journey of breathtaking visual ambition.
