Self-Portrait: Sphinx in 47 KM Zhang Mengqi

Film index A to Z

Zi Hua Xiang: 47 Gong Li Si Fen Ke Si

The seventh part of a series of films about a village 47 km from the city of Suizhou, Self-Portrait: Sphinx in 47 KM is a meditation on the suppressed past and uncertain future of a rural China being depopulated as workers migrate to cities. “Only …ism can save China.” Echoing that slogan, painted on a house and half-erased by time, the film combines observation and subtly dreamy sequences; it is a work of questioning. The questions of two elderly men haunted by their past and losses; those of the village’s children, like the little girl who imagines her future by painting it on the walls. Just under the surface is the mystery of the present, which everyone is trying to escape: the melancholy fabric of an unforgettable film. (BD)
