Palenque Sebastián Pinzón Silva

Film index A to Z

Palenque de San Basilio, in northern Colombia, is the only palenque, a fortified village founded by runaway slaves in resistance to European domination, to have survived until the present day. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, its culture and way of life have changed little over the centuries. As the vibrant cradle of Afro-Colombian music, the village moves to its beat every day: the pounding of pestles and chopping of machetes, street hawkers’ calls, the singing and chirping of birds and insects and, of course, the beating of drums. Ingeniously capturing the musicality of the place, Sebastián Pinzón Silva composes an ode to the perseverance of a people who have found in music the strength to overcome pain.
