International Feature Competition

Overseas Sung-A Yoon

Films index A to Z

Hoping to send money home to their families, they leave the Philippines and their children to work as housekeepers and nannies in the Persian Gulf, Lebanon, China and Singapore. It is a big step into the unknown. Through lessons and role-playing, they learn to serve meals and care for kids, and also to prepare for the worst: exhaustion, mistreatment, sexual assault. A beautifully filmed work, Overseas captures mutual aid, personal drama and the surrealism of the preparations. It is a powerful look at a form of modern slavery hiding in plain sight, in a booming market for domestic workers.
