Portraits

On Her Shoulders Alexandria Bombach

Film index A to Z

Nadia Murad survived the near eradication and enslavement of her Yezidi brethren, only to be thrust on the world stage, entrusted by the survivors to mobilize help and empathy from the international community’s very short attention span. Filmmaker Alexandria Bombach follows her on this incredibly taxing quest as Nadia, a naturally engrossing orator, tells her story over and over again to Western journalists and politicians who can never fathom what she’s gone through. Bombach catches in the down moments the weight of Nadia’s trauma and this impossible mission, made to be an activist when she should have been healing from the death of her family and destruction of her village. Attentive and respectful, On Her Shoulders offers a layered portrait of a young woman with infinite strength. (SM)
