Oil & Water Anjali Nayar

Films A to Z

In 2012, in northern Kenya, in the heart of Turkana County, the English company Tullow Oil appropriated traditional lands to explore for oil. Camera in hand, activist filmmaker Anjali Nayar follows the protest movement led by Selina Asekon Chumchum and the women of Turkana. Against the advice of the local men, who hope to benefit from the company’s largesse, the women organize, resist and expose the ecological disasters caused by the exploration activity. As the already-parched county starts losing access to water, the sense of urgency grows. A tribute to courageous women who are prepared to stand against capitalist and colonial exploitation, even to the point of defying their own culture’s norms. (Bruno Dequen)
