New Memories Michka Saäl

Film index A to Z

At the age of 61, Anne J. Gibson is an “emerging” photographer. After a drug- and family conflict-ridden life in Toronto, she belatedly discovered a passion for photography and a talent for capturing the world around her: Kensington Market, which she still knows inside out despite the neighbourhood’s accelerating gentrification. The bohemian district is still a vibrant home for Toronto’s counterculture, and a source of endless inspiration for Gibson. Alert to moments of grace and uniqueness that developers have not yet managed to stamp out, the artist roams the neighbourhood’s streets, exorcising her own demons in the process. A posthumous film by the late Michka Saäl, New Memories is a record of an encounter between two women with enormous hearts and poetic souls. (CS)
