My Skin, Luminous Nicolás Pereda, Gabino Rodríguez

Films index A to Z

Mi piel, luminosa

Actor and theatrical director Gabino Rodríguez worked on this project with filmmaker Nicolás Pereda (Tales of Two Who Dreamt, RIDM 2016). The film starts like a government report, but soon becomes a dreamlike tale. Hired by the Education ministry to produce a report on the use of public money in Mexico’s elementary schools, the two artists uncover, in a Michoacán village, the strange story of an Indigenous boy who lost his skin pigmentation after being adopted by a white family. Inspired by the work of Peruvian-Mexican cult author Mario Bellatin, the film shifts freely between acting and dreaming to tackle issues as wide-ranging as education, the environment, race and childhood rituals.
