My Mexican Bretzel Nuria Giménez

Films A to Z

“Lies are just another way of telling the truth.” That quotation, attributed to writer Paravadin Kanvar Kharjappali, opens this cinematic tour de force. The first feature by Spanish director Nuria Giménez is based on impressive archival work. Made entirely from home movies filmed between the 1940s and late 1960s, this intimate film is guided by excerpts from the diary of Vivian Barrett, a rich Swiss woman who led an enviable life. Deftly combining text, images and minimal sound, this captivating story takes us inside the torments of a woman who seemed to have everything. While the end of the film invites us to rethink everything we’ve just seen, it suffices to think back to the epigraph to realize that the filmmaker’s sleight of hand is anything but gratuitous.
