The Son

In 2013, Dima, a young recruit with Russia’s Special Forces, was killed – shot in the head during a mission in the republic of Dagestan. The 21-year-old soldier was the filmmaker’s cousin. Alexander Abaturov films the aftermath of Dima’s death, creating a twofold reflection on the army: on the one hand, the boy’s family, who must cope with the loss of a loved one, and on the other the deceased’s regiment, which must keep training more “red berets.” The tears of the grief-stricken parents contrast with the nation’s apology and the toughness of the elite forces in training. And yet, within these two distinct worlds, the film’s editing reveals a shared reality: brutality and death. Soon, more Dimas will go to war in the name of the motherland.
