La rivière Tanier June Balthazard

Film index A to Z

Who was Marie Lourdes? As she meets the people who knew her, on Mauritius, the filmmaker reconstructs a portrait of a grandmother who lost her memory and fell into silence. And yet once, she had been the queen of words: a demanding teacher, a woman known for her sharp wit, and above all a guardian of creole culture and its painful history. To be creole is precisely to be stripped of one’s memory, she would explain to her descendants. Now that she can no longer tell stories, her granddaughter June is using cinema to build her own narrative, in search of her family’s identity. Using beautiful, almost engraving-like black and white animation, she digs through scattered memories and brings shadows of the past to life. (ACO)
