A Morte Branca do Feiticeiro Negro

Timóteo was an Afro-Brazilian slave who died nearly 160 years ago in the city of Salvador. His suicide note retains all its power, and arguably gained some with the passage of time. Its text is the unifying thread that director Rodrigo Ribeiro uses for this immersive sensory essay. Timóteo’s words appear as subtitles under archival materials from the time of slavery, footage of meaningful places and forgotten ones, and images of different eras, slowly getting closer to our own time. Backed by a compelling soundtrack, this succession of moments, traces and ghosts gives a voice to slaves of the past while encouraging those of the present to rise up and never stop fighting for justice and freedom.
