The State of the World

Kinshasa Makambo Dieudo Hamadi

Film index A to Z

After presenting Maman Colonelle in 2017, Congolese filmmaker Dieudo Hamadi returns to RIDM with Kinshasa Makambo, a nuanced portrait of DRC’s politicized youth. Exploring the political and citizen movements opposing sitting President Joseph Kabila at the end of 2016, Hamadi follows the charismatic and determined Ben, Christian and Jean-Marie who fear neither prison, exile or death in their fight for self-determination. The young men disagree over tactics and all suffer the toll of resistance. Hamadi’s camera, present in every social, philosophical and strategy conversation, becomes a character in the middle of increasingly dangerous protest, dodging bullets to keep his eye steady on the events, to reveal a complex understanding of a determined generation rising up for its right to change the future.
