Kasiterit Riar Rizaldi

Films index A to Z

The island of Bangka, Indonesia, supplies one third of the world’s tin, a resource that will be put under stress by the rise of renewable energy and artificial intelligence. The multiple voices of AI, perhaps coming from the future, launch us on this journey. While the AI muses on its origins, time and capitalism, we discover the island’s different facets. Virtual representations attempt to build a myth, while reality keeps intruding, testifying to the ravages of exploitation and the disquieting proliferation of electronic waste. The voices conclude with a discussion of automation, as if warning humans that we will soon lose our place in images. A brilliant, chilling essay.
