The State of the World

Island of the Hungry Ghosts Gabrielle Brady

Film index A to Z

On Christmas Island, an Australian possession near Java, there’s a stunning annual migration of red crabs – millions of creatures scrabble from the jungle to the ocean. The tropical forest is, however, also home to a less inspiring phenomenon: a high-security detention centre where asylum seekers are interned indefinitely while the Australian authorities adjudicate their cases. Gabrielle Brady meets Poh Lin Lee, a trauma therapist who works to give the detainees some psychological support, in spite of the many obstacles thrown up by a dehumanizing, Kafkaesque bureaucracy. In parallel, the director captures local rituals intended to calm the spirits of the unburied dead, resulting in a meditative hybrid work, superbly filmed. Here, ghosts of the past and present expose humanity in crisis.
