Challenging Power - Nov 19 to Nov 25

Invasion Michael Toledano, Sam Vinal

Films A to Z

For years, the Unist’ot’en, part of the Wet’suwet’en nation, have been fighting against the construction of pipelines on their land, which they have never ceded. Under British Columbia law, contractors are trying to force the removal of a roadblock on the bridge leading to the Indigenous group’s lands. Cameras in hand, the filmmakers follow the struggle from the standoff all the way to the UN. The film bears essential witness to the state violence inflicted on Indigenous people on behalf of the oil industry, adding to a long list of traumas. But the battle also sparks the historical consciousness of a people, the power they draw from their culture and the solidarity grounded in their demands, from the flashpoint to streets across the country. (Apolline Caron-Ottavi)
