Histoire d'un regard Mariana Otero

Films A to Z

Looking for Gilles Caron

In April 1970, photojournalist Gilles Caron was at the peak of his career when he disappeared in Cambodia. He was only 30, but left behind more than 100,000 photographs shot around the world. With no prior connection to Caron, director Mariana Otero set out on a personal and poetic quest to understand the man and his time. Analyzing some of his most iconic photos, she tries to reconstruct his gaze and unpack what his work tells us about the meaning and responsibilities of his profession. From the Six-Day War to May ’68, to the conflict in Northern Ireland, the Prague Spring and the Biafran tragedy, Otero sheds light, 50 years after his death, on Caron’s vision of the most significant events of the late 60s.
