La bête humaine

Fail to Appear Antoine Bourges

Film index A to Z

Isolde is a young social worker in a poor Toronto neighbourhood. She is assigned to work with Eric, a thief who refuses to attend his court appearances. The mysterious man doesn’t seem to care about his reintegration, and is indifferent to Isolde’s attempts to help. In this film, Antoine Bourges uses a similar approach to his East Hastings Pharmacy (RIDM 2012): starting from field observations, he has actors recreate real scenes. Through this hybridization of reality and fiction, he gives individuals cinematic weight, turning them into larger-than-life “figures” – a bit like characters from novels, the kind Isabel says inspired her to want to help others.
