Extinction Salomé Lamas

Film index A to Z

Extinção

Since the fall of the USSR, the question of borders and territories has been sensitive – and sometimes explosive. At the centre of Extinction is Kolya, a young Moldovan who claims citizenship in Transnistria, a state not recognized by the international community. Salomé Lamas blends fiction and documentary to better capture the violent climate brewing in the region, where a Soviet mindset is still very much in evidence. Filmed in high-contrast black and white, the film is a fragmentary meander focusing on the question of national identity, while also necessarily touching on the policies of Vladimir Putin. Through dreaminess, free association and melancholy, the filmmaker confronts the past and the present.
