The State of the World

Exodus Bahman Kiarostami

Films index A to Z

It isn’t unusual to see migrants trying desperately to enter a country. On the other hand, it is more surprising that some find it a challenge to leave their host country. That is the situation in Iran, where thousands of Afghan workers, most of them undocumented, have been leaving the country since its currency collapsed under the weight of American sanctions enacted in 2018. But first they must submit to interrogation in a processing centre. The interviews are so deeply personal as to verge on the grotesque. Bahman Kiarostami (son of the famous Abbas) captures them without intervening. The filmmaker’s gaze is a humane, while the situation is extraordinary and secretive. The film puts the complex implications of global economic development in sharp relief.
