Distant Constellation Shevaun Mizrahi

Film index A to Z

He reminisces about his career as a photographer, she talks about the Armenian genocide, and another discusses his reading of Nabokov’s Lolita. Going from room to room, filmmaker Shevaun Mizrahi records the memories of residents of a retirement home in Turkey. With a remarkable sense of composition and detail, she shows old age in all its cruelty and beauty. There is of course melancholy, but there is also plenty of laughter. Alongside these moments spent with the elderly, she turns her camera to the window, observing the fast-growing city and the construction workers toiling next door. A silent dialogue emerges: inside this closed facility, memories fade away as the outside world marches on. (ACO)
