Belonging Burak Çevik

Aidiyet

A puzzle whose pieces keep coming together to reveal themselves, Belonging starts with a murder confession. A man talks about how he hired a hit man to get rid of his girlfriend’s mother, who was, according to the girlfriend, against the relationship. On screen, a series of sober shots of the different places figuring in the story lays out the cartography of a tragedy. Then the film shifts in style and time: it shifts back into the past, with actors carefully recreating the lovers’ first encounter, their interactions charged with all the tension set up in the first part. For this intriguing thriller, Turkish director Burak Çevik takes a unique and riveting approach, digging into the disturbing reasons for crimes of passion.
