Antigone

In this documentary bursting with feeling, filmmaker Pedro González Rubio follows university theatre students staging Sophocles’ Antigone in modern-day Mexico. Reaching deep inside to explore the emotional range necessary to play this role while awakening to the very serious adult world around them, these characters grow like bright flowers before the audience’s eyes. During protests for missing students and murdered women, through intimate moments in class, at home and with their wise professor pushing them to flourish, Rubio’s camera is a loving gaze that reflects this youth’s energy for passion, despite entering a brutal adult world. Playful directing and incredibly touching scenes make this film an ode to the most unbridled and impassioned moment in life. (SM)
