A Little Wisdom Yuqi Kang

Film index A to Z

In Lumbini, Nepal, a sanctuary marks the birthplace of the Buddha, and monasteries dot the surrounding forest. This is where 5-year-old Hopakuli lives, with his brother and other boys, all older. Yuqi Kang films the education of the young novices, who are all either far from their families or have no family at all. Keeping an appropriate distance, she films the boys’ interactions with each other, whether friendly or hostile, and with their teachers. She listens to their hopes and fears. The contrast between childish spontaneity and religious discipline is a striking one, and it is reflected in the film, which despite its austere surface is full of honesty and humour. (ACO)
