143 rue du désert Hassen Ferhani

Films index A to Z

143 Sahara Street

In the heart of the Algerian desert, a small house stands alone, hundreds of kilometres from any other sign of civilization. Ensconced in her café, Malika hosts truckers, motorcyclists and travellers. The menu is as austere as the environment, but the conversations are very lively. For his second feature after the well-received Dans ma tête un rond-point, filmed in an Algiers abattoir, Hassen Ferhani explores another microcosm, where he observes Algeria’s realities from a novel perspective. While Malika never seems to leave her post, she has no shortage of visitors, and each one benefits from a break from the road and a chance to share their personal and professional tales, and Malika becomes the popular memory of a country.
