UZU Gaspard Kuentz

Film index A to Z

On Japan’s Matsuyama Island, an annual religious celebration, the Dogo Autumn Festival, entails incredible violence: fearsome teams of men lift one-tonne shrines and rush headlong at each other. UZU immerses the audience in this mystic ritual, as fascinating as it is terrifying, from its ceremonious preparations to the bloody chaos after the collision. Gaspard Kuentz masterfully captures these bodies dedicated to joining as one for the contest, but who have nevertheless prepared with extreme dedication in everything from tattoos to attire. These bodies are at once objects and sacrifice. From the calm before the storm to the heart of the tumult, this is an experiential film of extreme intensity, well-served by stunning sound and camera work.
