The Prison in Twelve Landscapes Brett Story

Film index A to Z

An unprecedented topical reflection, exposing the devastating social, economic and political impacts of the American penal system through twelve vignettes. Forgoing the traditional structure of activist documentaries in favour of an obliquely meditative essay, Brett Story observes, from several angles, the omnipresence of prison down to society’s deepest inner workings. From shattered lives to companies dependent on the system whose premises are eerily reminiscent of penitentiaries, penal logic is both invisible and ubiquitous. Making brilliant use of cinematic language, the film becomes a powerful scream against the untenable inequalities of America today.

Presented in collaboration with the CSN, Cinema politica and the Chaire de la Fondation de la famille J.W. McConnell en Études Américaines de l'Université de Montréal
