The Devil's Freedom Everardo González

Film index A to Z

La libertad del diablo

Men and women face the camera. They are the victims and perpetrators of the disappearances, murders and torture that continue to haunt Mexico. We never see their faces: all wear neutral, expressionless masks made of roughly cut fabric. But each one’s glistening eyes convey the horror and suffering they have known. Starting from this simple setup, Everardo González ratchets up his film’s power. Hiding the faces leaves his subjects free to speak, while evoking the silence and anonymity that obscure the tragedy. The horrific masks, reminiscent of burn victims’ bandages, underline the power of words, gestures and gazes and emphasize the human impact of violence, rather than its context. A chilling and essential testimonial.
