Le botaniste

Outwardly, Raïmberdi Mamatumarov is a humble peasant from a remote valley in Tajikistan, but he is in fact a man of many talents. Consumed by a passion for botany, he records plants’ scientific names in his beautiful handwriting. An ingenious maker, he has turned scrap metal into a mini- hydroelectric power plant for his home. Thanks to gorgeous images and a thoughtful narrative structure, Maude Plante-Husaruk and Maxime Lacoste-Lebuis create a fascinating portrait of this exceptional old man, who is also a respected teacher, doting grandfather and storyteller par excellence. As he tells his life story, he also tells the story of a country few outsiders know, and reminds us how often appearances deceive us.
