Maison du bonheur

Time seems to stand still in the Montmartre apartment where Juliane Sellam, a fascinating septuagenarian astrologer, has lived for more than 50 years. Amidst her collection of objects, each with its dowdy charm and layers of memory, the ebullient and charming lady goes about her daily rituals, from making coffee and pastries to long makeup sessions and tending to her lush geraniums. Sofia Bohdanowicz films her in 30 smartly arranged vignettes, in grainy 16 mm that seems just as timeless as Juliane. In voiceover, Juliane tells her story and Sofia wonders: how can a mere film do justice to this woman? Inspired by Varda and Akerman, the director gives us an hour of pure joy, delivering on the promise of the film’s title.
