Le fort des fous Narimane Mari

Film index A to Z

Starting with accounts of the first colonial “scientific expeditions” and “civilizing campaigns” led by French colonialists in North Africa, the story follows a community of young nomads who start a utopian society in response to imperialist domination. The story of this community – both real and imagined – and more broadly of the legacy of colonialism, is freely explored by Algerian director Narimane Mari (Bloody Beans, RIDM 2013). In three acts, filmed in Algeria on the island of Cythera and in the Prosfygika housing complex in Athens, improvisations and reenactments rouse vague historical memories and tap into the power of imagination.
