Isabella Morra

Isabella di Morra, a 16th-century Italian poet, lived as a recluse in her brothers’ castle, until they murdered her at the age of 25. In this first short film by Isabel Pagliai, the poet is evoked to frame the daily lives of neglected young people in search of a new language with which to free themselves. In a forsaken banlieue on the outskirts of Boulogne-sur-Mer, in the north of France, girls on the cusp of adolescence experience the violence of the ghetto, male violence whose codes they have coopted. These lavishly manicured Lolitas crush the hand of a talking doll, swear like sailors and express their budding femininity by starting fights. A clear-eyed observation, both sociological and aesthetic, of incipient rebellion.
