Of Sheep and Men

In Algiers’ working class neighbourhoods, Habib, aged 16, dreams of a vet career while he trains his rather slothful new ram El Bouq (‘El Ram’), to become a champion in the hood’s prestigious sheep fights. Samir, older and wiser, just trades the fighting animals to make money in the capital, finding the right ones to train and to sell for the upcoming Eid, where all of them, including El Bouq, will be sacrificed for the Muslim holiday. Just as each man treats his beasts, Habib innocently wishes for success while Samir has no illusions left. Exploring this palpable tension between hope and fatalism, filmmaker Karim Sayad discovers coming of age and a complex manhood in his homeland Algeria. (SM)
