Sense of Place

Mzis qalaqi

In a small, semi-abandoned mining town in the Republic of Georgia, people methodically go about their business in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Two young women seem to be training for the Olympics in an empty stadium. A modern Sisyphus tries to demolish a tower by himself with nothing but a sledgehammer, while others live double lives as miners and stage actors, musicians and labourers. Beautifully filmed by Rati Oneli, who has an uncanny sense of composition, the hamlet is at once the quintessential Eastern European ghost town, and a symbol of a people’s resilience and refusal to disappear, continuing to live their lives with full intensity, against all odds.
