Baronesa Juliana Antunes

Baronesa

Andreia and Leidiane are neighbours and confidants. They live in Juliana, a favela on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. But Andreia is getting ready to move to Baronesa, another, equally feminine-sounding favela. Taking a sober, precise approach and working with a mainly female crew, Juliana Antunes films the two women closely, in all their complexity, as well as the many grandchildren and somewhat rudderless men in their world. The camera stays mainly inside Spartan interiors and courtyards, showing a rarely seen side of favela life. Through conversations and off-screen action, the outside world and its violence enter the picture in unexpected ways, revealing the depth of the women’s struggle to carry on normal lives.
