Austerlitz Sergei Loznitsa

Film index A to Z

With Austerlitz, Sergei Loznitsa continues his documentary exploration grounded in the brilliant use of static shots. This time, tourists are his subject. While the nature of their activities is not obvious at first glance, the film gradually makes them clear. Filmed at several sites, Austerlitz focuses on group tours of Nazi concentration camps. Making brilliant use of sound and multiple perspectives allowing wide shots, Loznitsa adds no words. Rather, he encourages us to observe this strange phenomenon with fresh eyes, developing a reflection on our relationship with historic sites. Withholding judgment, he highlights the deeply paradoxical nature of such tours, at once sincere and solemn homages and vacation activities.

Presented in collaboration with the maîtrise en développement du tourisme de l’ESG UQAM, Téoros - revue de recherche en tourisme and the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre
