24.24.24. Daniel Dietzel

Film index A to Z

Dedicated to the pioneer of the photographic analysis of movement, Eadweard Muybridge, 24.24.24. is a hypnotic and delightful experiment. We see Marché Maisonneuve, filmed for 24 hours in a static shot. Each of the 24 hours is visible simultaneously, and sped up, with the image separated into temporal strips. Night encroaches on day, the sounds of the daytime form a cacophony, people and objects appear and disappear almost magically. We learn to spot fleeting details and discover otherwise unnoticed elements. Time contracts and space multiplies in this essay, which transforms the mundane into the wonderful by stripping cinema to its core: a ballet of time and motion, shadows and light.
